One of Humanity’s Oldest Useful Plants
At first glance, the bottle gourd is simply a fruit. Yet for thousands of years, it has also been one of humanity’s most useful and versatile plants.
Known botanically as Lagenaria siceraria, the bottle gourd used today by Peruvian gourd artists belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, alongside pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and melons. It is a vigorous climbing plant whose fruits can develop into an astonishing variety of shapes and sizes.
Bottle gourds have been used by people around the world for thousands of years, and archaeological discoveries continue to push their history in the Americas further back. At El Gigante rockshelter in Honduras, directly dated remains of Lagenaria siceraria are approximately 11,000 years old, making the bottle gourd one of the earliest plants known to have been used by people in the Americas.
Unlike many plants valued mainly as food, the bottle gourd was prized for its shell. Before pottery became widespread, a fruit that could dry naturally into a lightweight, watertight vessel would have been extraordinarily useful.
As the fruit matures and dries, its outer shell becomes hard, light, and surprisingly durable. Its many shapes could serve many purposes. Gourds became bowls, bottles, dippers, storage containers, fishing floats, musical instruments, and more.
A Remarkable Journey to the Americas
For many years, researchers debated whether early people carried gourds into the Americas from Asia or whether the plants arrived naturally from Africa.
Genetic research published in 2014 found that ancient pre-Columbian gourds from the Americas were most closely related to African populations. Computer models of ocean currents also showed that wild African gourds could plausibly have crossed the Atlantic while floating on the sea.
That possibility is less improbable than it first sounds. The mature fruit has a buoyant, protective shell, and experiments have shown that gourd seeds can remain viable after spending months in seawater.
Together, the evidence supports an extraordinary possibility: wild gourds may have crossed the Atlantic naturally more than 11,000 years ago, near the end of the last Ice Age. Once they reached the Americas, people recognized their usefulness and began shaping them into vessels, tools, and other objects for daily life.
Ancient and Living Peruvian Gourd Art
In Peru, the bottle gourd eventually became more than a useful container or tool. It also became a surface for artistic expression.

At Huaca Prieta on Peru’s northern coast, archaeologists recovered thousands of fragments of squash and gourd shell. The discoveries showed how widely gourds were used by the people living there. They had been fashioned into bowls, jars, bottles, dippers, fishing-net floats, and other practical objects.
Among these everyday objects, archaeologists also found something more unusual: decorated gourd fragments dating back more than 4,000 years.
Some had been incised or carved, while others were decorated using pyroengraving, a technique in which heat darkens the shell to create a design. The skill visible in some of the carved geometric faces suggested that this was already an established decorative tradition rather than a moment of casual experimentation.
Echoing methods known from ancient Peru, gourd artists today continue to carve dried gourds by hand, using heat to darken and shade the surface and bring their designs to life. Their work often depicts the natural world, village life, and celebrations.
