A new collection of Backyard Bird inspired carved gourds. Featuring popular yard birds from across the US, our design team worked with master carver Pablo Hurtado and his team in Cochas Chico, Peru to bring these nature inspired ornaments, birdhouses and gift boxes to your store.

The beautifully carved birds may include the American Goldfinch, American Robin, Blue Jay, Eastern Bluebird, Hairy Woodpecker, House Wren, Mourning Dove, Northern Cardinal, Pileated Woodpecker, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Tufted Titmouse and/or White-breasted Nuthatch.

Designed and hand-crafted by artists in Peru, our fair trade gourds bring a modern flair to a 4,000-year-old carving and burning technique. Color, shape, size and carved details may vary as nature and artist intended.

Gourds Become Art

Nature starts the story, Peruvian artists complete it.

Gourds, relatives of pumpkins and cucumbers, grow along Peru’s coast and in the jungle. After harvest, they are sun-dried and brought into the Andes, where each one is carefully selected for its shape and size.

Artists first sketch each design in pencil, then carve it by hand with fine chisels. Using pyrography, a traditional technique passed down through generations, they carefully use fire to burn and shade the surface, revealing rich natural tones of caramel, brown, and black.
