Our Story

In 1998 as an American-Peruvian team we had a crazy idea: what if we could share the best of Peruvian craftsmanship with the world and create opportunities for top artists while having fun? Don as web expert and Alessandra as visual designer brought the perfect combination of creativity and expertise to get Lucuma Designs started! Today you may find our handmade gifts in over 500 specialty and fair trade shops, museums, botanical gardens, nature centers and boutiques in North America and few other places around the world. We hope you will find them inspiring. Don & Alessandra, Co-founders

Our Mission

Lucuma Designs promotes superb artists from Peru and Costa Rica. Inspired by our love for nature, our collections come to life through collaborative design, sustainability, fine craftsmanship and authenticity.

Through fair trade, our handmade gifts and traditional folk art become tools that connect, uplift, inspire, spark change and bring hope. Together we are creating a more compassionate and beautiful world.

Lucuma Designs has been a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation since 1999 and One Percent for the Planet since 2018.

The best stories begin with memorable characters, and children delight in discovering familiar faces from everyday life. Hand-knitted by women in Peru with 100% organic cotton yarn, these handmade finger puppets invite children to recreate the world they know while imagining the one they're still discovering.

This charming cast of characters encourages children to step into different roles, create everyday adventures and imagine the world through someone else's eyes. Whether acting out family life, inventing neighborhood adventures or telling stories inspired by favorite books, children naturally discover characters they relate to while developing storytelling skills, creative expression and enjoying open-ended, screen-free play.

Where it Fits

This versatile collection feels at home wherever stories are shared and imagination is encouraged. Our People Finger Puppets appeal to grandparents choosing meaningful gifts, teachers looking for storytelling tools, parents encouraging imaginative play and children eager to create stories inspired by the people around them. Easy to display year-round, they complement books, educational toys and handmade gifts across a wide range of retail settings. Their collectible variety encourages repeat visits as families discover new characters that feel familiar and meaningful.

Handmade by Women

Each puppet is hand-knitted by skilled women in the highlands of Peru using a traditional three-needle knitting technique passed down through generations. Working with 100% organic cotton yarn, the knitters bring every tiny character to life one stitch at a time. Their handmade work helps preserve a remarkable textile tradition while supporting sustainable livelihoods for their families.

Why Retailers Love It

Every child can find someone to become, someone they know or someone they dream of being. Combining exceptional craftsmanship, organic materials and a delightful cast of characters, this collection offers retailers a distinctive handmade toy that celebrates relationships, everyday moments and shared experiences that help children make sense of the world around them.

Important Notice for EU Stores: These handcrafted toys are made in small batches and do not carry the CE mark. As such, they cannot be sold in regions requiring this certification.

Why Finger Puppets Matter

Children often find it easier to share thoughts and feelings through a character than to speak directly as themselves. A tiny puppet can become a brave explorer, a worried rabbit, a silly monkey or a caring friend, giving children a safe, playful way to imagine, communicate and connect. At home, in the classroom or in the hands of therapists and educators, finger puppets help open the door to conversation, storytelling and creative expression in a way that feels natural, comfortable and fun.

Why We Choose Organic Cotton

We believe toys should bring joy to children while leaving a lighter footprint on the Earth. That’s why we choose organic cotton yarn. It’s one of the best solutions we’ve found for making natural toys while supporting farming practices that are gentler on nature.

Organic farming helps reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, while supporting healthier soils, biodiversity, and cleaner waterways. That can make a difference not only for the land, but also for the farming communities and ecosystems connected to it.

From the farmers who grow the cotton, to the women who knit each finger puppet, to the children who bring them to life through play, organic cotton is a choice we can feel good about.

Why Fair Trade Matters

For our team at Lucuma Designs, Fair Trade is more than a business model. It's a way of life that guides our daily decisions and inspires us to keep learning and evolving.

It lives in the relationships we've built over many years with the artist partners we know personally. Together, we've grown through trust and a shared commitment to building sustainable livelihoods and a better future for their families and communities.

Fair Trade is about much more than creating jobs. Through creative collaboration and by encouraging our artist partners to continually refine their craft and excel at what they do, we've built handmade collections our clients have come to trust year after year.

Ultimately, Fair Trade reminds us that business can be a force for good when it's guided by shared values and meaningful connections.

Lucuma Designs has been a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation since 1999.
